Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
